GRAN CANARIA
Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, is often described as a "miniature continent"—a paradise of striking contrasts. Here, golden beaches meet dramatic volcanic landscapes, and vibrant city life blends seamlessly with peaceful mountain villages. Whether you're exploring the rolling dunes of Maspalomas, the lush forests of Tamadaba, or the charming streets of Las Palmas, the island offers a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation.
For me, Gran Canaria feels like a home away from home. I've had the pleasure of visiting six times in the past ten months, and I keep coming back for more. What draws me in? It’s everything—the endless sunshine, the warmth of the people, and the island’s unique charm. Gran Canaria captivates with its beauty and diversity, making it a destination with something for everyone.
TRAVEL GRAN CANARIA
Choosing where to stay in Gran Canaria depends on what you want from your trip. If relaxation is your priority, I’d recommend Puerto Rico & Amadores. While often a bit pricier than other areas, this region offers a more luxurious and tranquil stay. It’s perfect for unwinding on picture-perfect beaches, enjoying calm turquoise waters, and soaking up the sun in a peaceful atmosphere.
If you’re after a livelier experience, Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas are fantastic choices. Playa del Inglés is a vibrant beach destination known for its energetic atmosphere, diverse nightlife, and bustling bars, while Maspalomas offers a slightly more upscale vibe with its iconic sand dunes, elegant resorts, and excellent dining options. Both locations cater to those looking for excitement, whether it’s dancing the night away or enjoying a mix of beach days and buzzing nightlife.
So, what is there to do? For me, Playa del Inglés is the perfect place to stay—it has everything you need, plus easy access to public transport, making it a great base for exploring the island. If you're staying here, there are plenty of must-visit spots nearby, and I’m excited to share some top recommendations!

Visit Maspalomas Anexo II Centre – Start your first day with a leisurely stroll towards English Beach, the perfect way to explore the area. As you make your way to the beachfront, you'll take in the island's stunning beauty. Once there, why not stop by one of the many restaurants or bars for a delicious lunch or a refreshing drink? It’s the perfect way to soak in the atmosphere and ease into your adventure. This vibrant location never gets boring—there’s always something new happening! Every time I visit, it’s the first place I go. As a tourist, be prepared to be approached multiple times by friendly staff inviting you into their bars and restaurants. While it might feel overwhelming at first, by the end of the week, you’ll appreciate these interactions. They offer a wonderful way to connect with the locals, especially if you're traveling solo. The people here are incredibly warm and welcoming, always looking out for visitors and making sure you feel at home.

Maspalomas Sand Dunes – As you leave the Anexo II Centre, you'll spot a winding set of steps across from Café Mozart II. These lead you back up to the coastal path. Once at the top, turn left, and you'll soon reach the famous Maspalomas Sand Dunes.
If the sun is shining and the wind is mild, I highly recommend exploring this stunning natural wonder. It is honestly a beautiful sight to see. Just be cautious—the sand can get extremely hot, so watch your step!

Walk to San Agustin – Walking from Playa del Inglés to San Agustín is a refreshing coastal adventure. The route takes you along the beautiful, sun-kissed coastline, with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and rugged cliffs. As you stroll along the meandering coastal path, you'll pass through peaceful stretches of beach, quiet coves, and charming seaside spots. Once you reach San Agustín, you’ll be welcomed by its more tranquil, relaxed vibe compared to its bustling neighbour, Playa del Inglés. It's the perfect walk for those who enjoy a mix of scenic views, fresh air, and a bit of exploration.

Visit the Market – Every Saturday, Playa del Inglés hosts a lively market at Aguila Roja, a vibrant spot brimming with energy. Stalls stretch down the streets, offering everything from handmade crafts and clothing to jewellery, fresh produce, and delicious local treats. It's the perfect place to pick up unique souvenirs or try some authentic Canarian flavours. Be sure to haggle—you’ll often find you can score a better price! The atmosphere is friendly and laid-back, with street performers adding to the fun vibe. Whether you're on the hunt for a great bargain or simply soaking in the lively ambiance, Playa del Inglés Market offers a colourful, unforgettable experience that truly captures the spirit of the area.

Puerto De Mogan – Visiting Puerto de Mogán feels like stepping into a postcard. Known as "Little Venice" for its charming canals, vibrant blue-and-yellow-trimmed white cottages, and flower-filled lanes, this picturesque fishing village is the perfect place to unwind. Wander along the quaint streets lined with cosy cafes, unique boutiques, and waterfront restaurants, all offering stunning views of the marina. The lively atmosphere, combined with the serene beach, makes it an ideal spot for relaxation. Puerto de Mogán is a truly enchanting destination. When I visited, I chose to take the ferry from Puerto Rico, which takes around 30 minutes. While you can also access the village by coach, the ferry offers a scenic route that you wouldn’t want to miss.

Puerto Rico Catamaran – Getting out on the ocean is one of the best ways to make the most of your trip to Gran Canaria, with a wide range of water sports and activities available, from surfing and parasailing to jet skiing and more. But if you're looking for the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, a Catamaran trip is a must. There are plenty of options, including Afrikat, Supercat, and others, but I highly recommend the Aquasports 4-hour Catamaran Excursion in the South. This ideal day trip lets you soak up the sun on comfortable sunbeds, explore stunning sea caves and towering cliffs, and enjoy snorkelling or even some watersports. Plus, lunch and drinks are included, making it a truly relaxing and memorable experience.

Tribal Lounge – Looking for the perfect place to visit for some delicious food or perhaps looking for somewhere to sit for an evening drink, I can´t recommend Tribal Lounge enough. This unique venue combines great music, a welcoming atmosphere, and an eclectic mix of people. Located in the heart of Playa del Inglés, it’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists looking for a laid-back yet lively place to unwind. The lounge offers a relaxed vibe with its modern décor, comfortable seating, and a well-curated drinks menu featuring everything from cocktails to craft beers. Known for its regular events, including DJ sets and live performances, Tribal Lounge is a go-to for those who enjoy a good night out with great tunes and a fun crowd. Whether you’re stopping by for a chill evening or looking to dance the night away, Tribal Lounge offers a fantastic mix of entertainment and a memorable experience.

The Galway Party Place – If you're looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy town, why not check out The Galway Bar? Tucked away as a hidden gem, it's the perfect spot to unwind, catch a football match, enjoy a friendly game of pool, or join in on some fun karaoke. With its energetic staff and lively atmosphere, you’ll feel right at home whether you’re relaxing with friends or getting involved in the exciting party games. If you’re in the mood to dance, socialize, or just have a great time in Gran Canaria, The Galway Bar offers a fantastic, laid-back alternative to the typical nightlife scene. It’s the ideal place for a fun and memorable night out

Irish Centre – If you're looking for a more nightclub-like atmosphere, I would 100% recommend visiting the Irish Centre at Aguila Roja. While there are clubs in Playa del Inglés, none quite capture the lively, upbeat vibe of these discobars. The top two spots I’d suggest are Flannigans Irish Bar and Hawai. Flannigans is perfect for dancing the night away—open from 8 pm to 4 am, it’s a great venue to experience Gran Canaria’s nightlife. The main DJ, Badr, is one of the best you’ll hear, spinning incredible tracks that keep the energy high. The staff here are fun, welcoming, and love joining in on the party. If you're looking for something a bit more laid-back yet still full of fun, head next door to Hawai. With DJs spinning tunes on Fridays and Saturdays, it’s the perfect spot for a drink and a chill vibe without sacrificing the party atmosphere.
This is just a taste of what Gran Canaria has in store. Whether you're seeking relaxation on sun-kissed beaches, adventure through rugged mountain landscapes, or a deep dive into the island's rich culture, Gran Canaria promises an unforgettable experience. So, pack your bags and get ready to explore everything this stunning island has to offer!
When is the best time to visit Gran Canaria? The beauty of this island is that it offers sunshine and warmth year-round, but the timing of your visit can make a big difference depending on what kind of experience you're after. If you'd like to enjoy pleasant weather and have a chance to connect with the locals without the busy crowds, April and the end of September to October are perfect. These months strike a great balance between mild temperatures and fewer tourists, making it an ideal time for a more relaxed experience.
For those looking to escape the colder months, the winter season (December to February) offers a warm retreat, with temperatures still comfortable enough to enjoy the island’s outdoor activities. While it's a popular time for European visitors, Gran Canaria never feels overcrowded, so it’s a wonderful option for a winter getaway. On the other hand, the summer months (June to August) can get quite hot, especially in inland areas, and attract larger crowds, so if you prefer a more peaceful and cooler escape, it's best to avoid this peak season.
